Ian Astbury

Real Name:

Ian Robert Astbury

Profile:

Ian Robert Astbury was born May 14, 1962, in Heswall, Cheshire, England, to a Scottish mother and an English father. He spent a majority of his childhood living in Hamilton, Ontario, Canda, where he discovered the cultures and backgrounds of various tribes of Indigenous Peoples in southern Ontario — which has featured in many of his songs over the years.

He founded Southern Death Cult in Bradford in 1981, with him as vocalist under the name Ian Lindsay. They released one single and toured with Bauhaus.

While on tour, he met Billy Duffy and decided to end Southern Death Cult to form Death Cult with Duffy. In 1984, the band dropped the word Death and achieved international fame as The Cult. He has been the vocalist with The Cult ever since.

Astbury married Aimee Nash in Las Vegas on May 26, 2012. He had met in May 2010 during the "LOVE LIVE" tour, when her band, The Black Ryder, opened up for The Cult.
