Jimi Hendrix
Real Name:
James Marshall Hendrix
Profile:
American modern electric blues guitar virtuoso; lyricist, vocalist.
Born: 27 November 1942, Seattle, USA – Died: 18 September 1970, London, UK.
A self-taught guitarist, Hendrix began his musical career backing such R&B greats as Ike and Tina Turner, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, Little Richard, The Isley Brothers, and B.B. King. Brought to London from New York by former Animals bassist Chas Chandler, Hendrix quickly established himself as the brightest new star on the burgeoning progressive rock scene of the early '60s. Along with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell he formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
After a landmark appearance at the Monterey Pop festival, their debut album Are You Experienced was released in September 1967. The album, and its 1968 successors - Axis: Bold As Love and the seminal blues-oriented developments of Electric Ladyland - earned Hendrix international acclaim as a premier rock instrumentalist and innovator of his generation. A 'greatest hits' collection, "Smash Hits" (1969), and an in-concert memento of his historic Monterey appearance, "Otis Redding / Jimi Hendrix Experience at Monterey" (1970), followed before his untimely death. A posthumous studio album, "The Cry Of Love", was released in January of 1971, followed by the double album soundtrack to the documentary film "Jimi Hendrix" in June of 1973.

A tragic loss for the world. Jimi was not even close to his artistic heights and potentials at the time of his passing.

Jimi Hendrix - born as Johnny Allen, but in 1946 renamed James Marshall - probably after his uncle Leon Marshall Hendrix (1912-32) - by his father Al (James Allen Hendrix, b. 1919 in Vancouver, Canada) and buried next to Al's mother Nora Hendrix*, in the tiny suburb Renton, 30 mins. by bus south of central Seattle when I was there in Aug. '94 (there was no mausoleum back then, just a framed stone in the gound, as seen in the 1992 Cameron Crowe movie, Singles). Jimi - who would've been 80 next Sunday, on 27 Nov. 2022 - released 3 official albums as The Jimi Hendrix Experience 1967-68, as well as Band of Gypsies in early 1970 while alive. He died just before he'd put his finishing touches (he was a control freak and a perfectionist) to The Cry of Love (1971) in his then hypermodern, 16-channel studio Electric Lady in Greenwich Village, NYC, New York.
All the other albums are, of course, released by the various companies - official an unofficial (there's lots of music from before 1966 without any copyright out there) - since his father Al in 1974 had sold all the rights to the at least 1,600 hrs of taped music for a mere $100,000, and since the interest in Jimi's music quickly had waned, it was considered a good deal at the time. By then, he was forgotten by most. An official LP or two a year were relesed by Reprise, and later Polydor. There was never any thought behind those releases, and songs from different sessions and time periods were just mixed together, sometimes even using outside musicians to fill the gaps.
His played his last festival, the German Love And Peace Festival** (4-6 Sept. 1969) on the tiny island of Fehmarn, near Denmark, 6 Sept. 1970 (released on several bootlegs with crappy sound). It didn't have much to do with neither love, nor peace, since it was tormented by bad weather and Hells Angels raising hell. He did a few gigs in London before his premature death 12 days later.
With the rise of CDs and the Seattle grunge scene (where Jimi Hendrix was often mentioned), some lawyers whispered into Al's ear that he'd been cheated (he hadn't...), and that he'd probably win a trial if he witnessed and said that he hadn't understood what he'd signed (he did...). Fast forward; They won, and in 1995, Al gained control of a multimillion-dollar franchise. Soon, Jimi sold more albums than in the 60s, but not only that, there was all the merch too. So when Al died in Renton 2002, aged 82, he left everything to his adopted daughter Janie, b. 1961, from his marriage to of a Japanese woman, and his nephew (Leon Mashall's son). None of Jimi's brother Leon (don't mix them up), his other siblings Joseph, Pamela or Kathy, or his Swedish son James Daniel Sunquist (b. 1969), got one cent. Through the years, she'd built up a reputation of fake childhood memories of her "beloved, big brother".
Actually, Jimi was forced (it was either that or prison...) to sign up for miitary service on 31 May, 1961 after having been caught twice, riding stolen cars. He was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Hendrix's rebellious attitude meant he slept while on duty, and he wasn't a particularly good marksman. Quote: According to reports, he was a "habitual offender" when it came to missing midnight bed checks and was unable to "carry on an intelligent conversation." True to his calling, he continued playing guitar while off-duty, which didn't endear him with the other men in the barracks, who just wanted a good night's sleep. His constant noodling led one of his commanding officers to comment, "This is one of his faults, because his mind apparently cannot function while performing duties and thinking about his guitar. Although Hendrix had signed up for three years of service, Captain Gilbert Batchman had had enough after one year, and made the case for Hendrix to be discharged, as his problems were judged to not be treatable by "hospitalization or counseling." An alleged ankle injury during a parachute jump gave young Hendrix the opportunity to bow out of active duty with an honorable discharge." Unquote*** Also, he met a certain Billy Cox there, and they formed a band together.
Jimi never returned to Renton, and only met "his beloved sister" Janie twice at different shows in 1968, and only a few minutes each time (photos with the two are available online). His poor, mistreated and since 1951 estranged mother Lucille L. Jeter (1925-58) had already died from cirrhosis to the liver from heavy drinking. 16-year-old Lucille never wanted to marry Al, but was already 3 months pregnant when they married 31 March 1942. Three days later, Al was shipped off to Fort Sill, OK, for basic training for WWII. He was a known brute, and jealous at that, something the shy, withdrawn Jimi inherited while drunk. She's buried ~100 meters from her son, and not in that butt-ugly "mausoleum" sis built. The fight over the Jimi Hendrix Estate (Experience Hendrix ended once and for all in 2004, when Jimi's oldest brother Leon lost a lawsuit. The lovely Janie started selling not only new, remastered CDs and DVDs, but also a home sex tape with Jimi on expensive DVD, as well as seeing to that no videos (except private or foreign shot) can be seen on YouTube. "Greed works."
*) Georgia-born Zenora "Nora" Rose Hendrix (née Moore) (1883-1984) married Bertran Philander "Ross" Hendrix (b. Hendricks in 1866 in Urbana, OH) in the 1900s, and settled in Vancouver in 1911 or 1912. They both belonged to the same traveling vaudeville troupe, and toured mainly in the Portland-Seattle area when economical hardship put an end to all of that in Seattle in 1912, why the decided to look for permanent, offstage work in Vancouver. They had four children 1912-19, the last one being Al, Jimi's father. A fifth child, a boy b. in 1926, died after two months. On Nov. 28 1922, they had become Canadian citizens. "Ross" Hendrix died 21 March, 1934 from a ruptured aorta. He was 67, and is buried at Burnaby Ocean View Burial Park. When Nora Hendrix died in Vancouver 24 July, 1984, she was 100. She was, however, buried next to her famous grandson, 27, who used to visit her in the 50s. Only a few years ago, neighbours still remembered Jimi rehearsing at her Vancouver house. Regarding the rumours of her being half-Cherokee, noone has found any evidence for it whatsoever, and it is now believed that it simply had been part of one of her acts. But Jimi took it very seriously, and never lost a chance to mention it with great pride.
**) Fehmarn is on the important, heavily trafficked route (the so called Bird Flight Line) between southernmost Sweden/the larger Copenhagen area and Hamburg, Germany. There's a memorial stone, Jimi Hendrix Gedenkstein, at the site;

I don`t care, 14 is good ... not what i expected, but it`s ok.
Jimi had a big talent in song-writing and was also a badass guitar-picker, but people tend to forget that the Experience wouldn`t be that much of a experience without a badass drummer like Mitch, or an very talented calm anchor Noel.
The records were produced in a bad way to make Jimi look glamorous, the covers showed him mostly sitstanding above the other band members and in the Twosome "Are you experienced / Axis bold as love" lp Mitch isn`t even mentioned on the Cover or the plate.

They say "The good die young". I think that maybe for some it's meant to be so we can only remember them at their very best as opposed to watching them age and in some small way take away from their legacies. Like champion fighters who stay in the ring too long. We had Jimi for a short time and in that short time he changed the course of rock history. Better to remember him as he was then every time you hear Red House, Little Wing or Purple Haze. Because as long as we have his music, we have him.

March 20, 2023He pioneered the use of high-amplitude volume and feedback noted in songs like " PURPLE HAZE " (1967) and " FOXEY LADY " (1967) from his " ARE YOU EXPERIENCED ? " (1967) album . Feedback had been noted to be in songs like the BEATLES 's " I FEEL FINE " (1964) and THE WHO's " MY GENERATION " (1965) . Feedback from music amplification was highly undesirable in the 1950's and was seldom heard in the many 1950's recordings but in the 1960's feedback was harnessed and used in various recordings .
He used two (2) guitar accessories :the fuzzbox ( distortion ) and the wah-wah pedal .
He is an unfortunate member of the so-called "27 CLUB" ( musicians that died at the age of 27 ) which included Jim Morrison , Janis Joplin , Kurt Kobain , and Amy Winehouse .
ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE lists him as NUMBER ONE on the list of the ONE HUNDRED GREATEST GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME !
