Hi milkunderwood, I think you are wrong. The US Nonesuch reissue in listed as the 40th best-selling LP in The Billboard of 23 March 1968, with the indication that it had been 2 weeks on chart. I have a Schwann catalog from 1961 and it isn't listed, then I jump to 1969 and it is listed. The first trace I have of the recording is in my German Bielefelder Katalog of January 1966, on Eurodisc S 70 163 KK (stereo), 70 162 KK (mono), it's not listed in my January 1961 issue. It was reissued on Bärenreiter Musicaphon “rote Serie” BM 30 SL 1215 (listed in my Bielefelder February 1971), which is listed here at Discogs. The fine print on the back cover photo is hardly legible, but I think I read "Aufnhame Juli 1963", but in answer to my query an eBay seller of that LP has said "1961" (in Schwetzingen, Germany). So the latter is the date that I retain.

The Barchet-Münchinger recording has indeed been dated, as all the Münchinger-Decca Seasons (three is all, the two next with Werner Krotzinger and Konstanty Kulka), in the invaluable Decca Discography of Philip Stuart, which you can find on CHARM. It's March 1951, and the first Seasons to be recorded in the LP era (the two previous versions were by Bernardino Molinari on Cetra, 1942, and Louis Kaufman on Concert Hall Society, December 1947).

Barchet re-recorded the Seasons, as part of a complete Opus 8 cycle, with Rolf Reinhardt and the Pro Musica Orchestra Stuttgart, for Vox, originally DL 173, reviewed in High Fidelity, August 1955, which permits to date it 1954 or 1955. When you say that "I have owned the Nonesuch LP since at least the mid-1950s", I think you may be confusing the recording with Tilegant with that one.

Incidentally, I don't agree AT ALL with your assessment of Barchet's recordings. I haven't heard the one with Tilegant but I have the two previous ones, they are exactly the opposite of what you say: not conductors unabashedly presenting the music as program music, but conductors entirely blotting out the underlying program of Vivaldi's Seasons, taking the Allegros at impossibly trudging tempos (Münchinger did it again with Krotzinger - it's only on his third attempt with Kulka that he got it about right) that deprive them of all their programmatic content, no joyous greeting of Spring by the birds, no joyous dance of nymphs and shepherds or to celebrate the new harvest, a depressive cuckoo in Summer, no prancing horses on a hunting outskirt in autumn. As one perceptive critic put it: "bachified Vivaldi" (and Bach as he was performed in the sixties: solemn, ponderous, joyless, boring).

Newbie here. I'm not sure whether Discogs tries to date recordings by recording date or by (P) date, or whether one or the other is preferred, or specified. When I'm cataloging, I always use the actual recording date, and where that is unknown, I abbreviate using the "<" symbol to indicate a date prior to (or the same as) the (P) date. Example: Münchinger:<64.

I'm posting here to point out that in addition to Barchet's Le Quattro Stagione with Münchinger and the Stuttgart Kammerorchester (undated) on London LL-386, Barchet also recorded these concerti with Friedrich Tilegant conducting Das Südwestdeutsche Kammerorchester, on Nonesuch H-71070, also undated. This latter recording has been reissued on CD, on Denon COCQ-84444. I found a copy at Amazon.jp as ASIN: B0014CDCN0. Nearly all printed information on this disc is in Japanese, but I do find the date 1961. However, to the best of my recollection, I have owned the Nonesuch LP since at least the mid-1950s. Other English on the Denon CD gives "Licensed by Ariola-Eurodisc GmbH, Munich", and "(P)2008 Columbia Music Entertainment, Inc." I bought this Nonesuch LP before I found the London issue (shown here as Decca) LP, and it has been my general impression that the Tilegant probably predates the Münchinger.

I like these two performances about equally well, greatly preferring either of them to any other recording I know of the Four Seasons. Barchet, and his accompanying conductors, are unabashed in presenting the concertos as program music, unlike virtually every more recent recording.
