Venetian Snares

Real Name:
Aaron Funk
Profile:
Aaron Funk (born January 11, 1975, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada), a producer of vastly varying types of electronic music, gained a profile in experimental techno circles with his signing to the Planet Mu label run by Mike Paradinas (aka µ-Ziq).

Often abbreviated to "Vsnares" -- Funk's distinctive style reflects unconventional time signatures and extremely rapid and erratic rhythms. Unpredictable and stimulating, the effect is intense. His style has been critically acclaimed, notably by the late British radio disc jockey John Peel.

Funk's first release was Greg Hates Car Culture, an EP for the History Of The Future Label, followed by Salt for Zhark and Fuck Canada // Fuck America with Stunt Rock for CLFST. When Mike Paradinas heard Greg Hates Car Culture, he immediately signed Funk for Planet Mu. The first Venetian Snares LP on Planet Mu, Making Orange Things (a co-production with Speedranch), dropped in early 2001; following in short order were 5 more releases, all released before the end of 2002. Funk continued recording for a variety of labels, including Hymen, Addict, and Sublight Records, and has also recorded as Snares Man!, BeeSnares, Snares and Senetian Vnares.

Amazing talent. Unemcumembed and driven to sculpt in his own image, vsnares is on an island in his particular mode of craft. Be it Winter in the belly of the snake and it's masterful twisted intimacy, doll doll doll's dark math genius, My downfalls innovative cinematic break core, early frenzied material or later material, there's no peer to his breakneck delivery and uncompromising individuality. An unapologetically multi faceted musical challenge in intensity and ability, vsnares body of work is an incredible achievement.

probably my favorite artist of all time. period. an absolute genius, he has such a signature style and sound but simultaneously leads a very dynamic and huge discography. you never know what to expect from this man. his passion for music shows in his music, he'd die without this hobby. bless him.

What can I say about Venetian Snares. His music makes me want to take a nap, I don't know why. It's pretty good, but it makes me doze off y'know. I like the thing he did with dj fishead and his records on Addict are pretty good. But everything else, just makes me so sleepy.

I quite enjoy the time I spend sleeping so that's a pretty huge plus for me. I started listening to Funk's music when I was in my final year of college and I gotta tell you, a lot of my getting familiar with it was sleeping on the bus on the way. His melodies are really easy-listening especially if you're into hard breakcore, like Steve Albini or KC and the Sunshine Band.

I highly recommend checking out print(schiver) or whatever and the skelechairs and moonglow 12"s on Addict. If you're a hipster who is just looking for your fix listen to the ultra-up-it's-own-ass Ross from friends cillit bang or whatever i don't even know what language that it (probably french cause that seems like a french thing to do).

My ways turned me from electronic "dance" music through soundtracks to classical and of course 20th century classical (meaning "serious orchestral" music, not only classical or neoclassical genres) in searching for best transcendention and intellectual joy thru such abstract art as music. Couple years ago I was in search of what changed in electonic music, trying to find "best and hardest" of all - and I found Venetian Snares - from that time on, every other electronic music is... boring :). With the knowledge of music, practical composing skills and art education, I simply didn't get on any more genuine electronic (I cannot say just "dance") music composer. Autechre, Aphex Twin can have more complex synths sounds for example, but they are trapped within their style and song form-from the beginning you know how the track will be. Aaron Funk is Joker between Batmen, his music serves "classical" rule-to be over the genre-in fact he prooves dominance of rhytm over melody and theme can be made.
I'm listening to Venetian Snares for three years and I stil shake my head of wonder. I don't hesitate to state, that he's the first genius of computer music era, where every manipulation with sound is possible (unlikely of hardware machines generation) and he's capable somehow to manage all attributes of it to totaly balanced result. Visiting genres as jungle, dnb, glitch, hardcore, is like fetish studies on rhytmic passion where sometimes fun and joy (or postmodernism?) is more important than cool-esnes of the track involving brecht's effect of alienation.
But while listening to his synth-aka gothic- violins, I sometimes just wish: Give him a live orchestra. And learn him basics how to write the score-not sampling. That's the only thing Venetian Snares can go even further than he already is- genius of electronic "dance" music.

This guy makes - intriguing - music. It's really driving, hard, and abrasive. It's like the death metal of electronic music.

He's got talent, that much cannot be debated. This probably a love-it or hate-it artist. I like some of his stuff and absolutely loathe the rest.
