The Monkees were cute pin-ups created for television, but their music made them stick. Little pop nuggets, their early singles are like little pieces of silver and gold. A team of genius composers helped create those hits, including Neil Diamond and Carole King. The Monkees involved a preeminent team of arrangers, musicians, and producers, and their records stand along with The Beach Boys as some of the preeminent products of the Los Angeles studio scene. At the same, the "Pre-Fab Four" eventually proved their musical legitimacy in later years with bold forays into psychedelia and country-rock.

They always struggled with rock and roll pariahs, but had these tunes been album cuts by artists with more Hall of Fame cred, no one would've questioned their greatness. The truth is, the group had a plethora of variety and vision, and succeeded at everything from novelty-inspired music hall to psychedelia to forays into early country-rock. "She Hangs Out sounds like a lost garage-rock classic. "Randy Scouse Git" is experimental and slyly witty. And "Some of Shelly's Blues" went on to become a staple for The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Hear its pedal steel guitar and mournful lyrics and ask yourself if you still think The Monkees weren't a real band. They were!
