Bo Diddley

Bo Diddley

Real Name:
Ellas Otha Bates McDaniel
(December 30, 1928, McComb, MS, United States - June 2, 2008, Archer, Florida, United States.)
An influential singer & guitarist who recorded his best known material for the Checker and Chess labels. In 1955, Diddley scored his first hit with the double sided single "Bo Diddley"/"I'm A Man" and a string of R&B hits followed through the 50's & early 60's, most notably "Diddley Daddy", "Say Man", "Roadrunner" and "Mona".

His trademark rhythm, the "Bo Diddley Beat" (shave-and-a-haircut, two bits), was an acknowledged influence on Buddy Holly, The Rolling Stones, Jim Morrison, The Yardbirds and George Thorogood, among others.

Diddley was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987 (Performer).

From 1960 to 1980 he was married to Kay McDaniel (born Kay Reynolds)

The greatest of the early rock n' rollers (in my opinion) and the one that made the best and most timeless music. Great songwriter, guitarist, sessionman and innovator. Pity he couldn't have copyrighted the 'shave-and-a-haircut-two-bits' rhythm because then he would have been very, very rich. Came from a different branch of rock n' roll than Elvis and the white rockers so would have existed without EP's influence anyway. Made dozens of ground-breaking singles and a run of brilliant albums that extended well past the 1970s. When he tired of making great RnR (briefly) he moved effortlessly into funk. His live shows were something to behold. All the 50s guys made great music but Bo means the most to me.
