Loop made the best acid drone-rock. Obvious inspiration was drawn from Spacemen 3, the main innovators of this particular branch of acid rock.

But inspirations and influences were digested and subsumed (so rare in rock/pop/hiphop!) and they emerged as the purveyors of a singularly hypnotic, yet muscular acid-drone sound.

Where Spacemen 3 remained anchored to the palette of classic rock n roll, Loop could be more modern and melodic a la the C86 scene - "16 Dreams" & "Spinning", or dark and gothic, atmospherically, with nods to the early Sisters of Mercy EP's - "This Is Where You End" / "Fever Knife" from "Fade Out".

From "Fade Out" onwards, most of the songs are like sonic installations, creating an amazing sense of space and stillness of time, though they can rock hard and burn bright, too, with a Stooges-like intensity, for example on "The Nail Will Burn" or "Black Sun".

Listening on headphones, you can hear the tireless attention to detail that went into production - the repetition of repeated chord patterns is broken by layers of solo guitar weaving from back to front and side to side of the stereo image. By the time of "A Gilded Eternity", the sonics were beginning to take over from the songs, things getting more "experimental" and less rocking.

It's hard to think of a British psyche group who have surpassed Loop in terms of either intensity or hypnotic effect, though The Heads get a very honourable mention as an awesome act with the same aim of burning out your eyes and frying your brain!
