Dominick Fernow. A summation of Vatican Shadow is, perhaps, William Butler Yeats' "The Second Coming." If you are a fan, then I don't have to tell you what to get: You already have it. However, I am listening to FACT Mix 556; blown away. W/ every release Fernow validates VS's continuation and legitimizes his position in techno's deepest, occult underworld.

June 23, 20201.) carried the torch from Muslimgauze, without sounding like a poor pastiche
2.) smashed up the sound palettes of old-world industrial, the bastardised DIY gear fuckery of 80s-90's cassette culture, contemporary "goth techno" à la Downwards and Sandwell District, alongside the ambient soundscapes of the 90s, to create a totally unique and idiosyncratic audio signature
3.) utilised the same exploitative and obsessive use of imagery as noise, and indeed the Prurient project
4.) is well-read and informed enough to walk the tightrope above being too "on the nose" with hyper-specific track titles and visuals, while still maintaining the necessary vaguery to inflict the intended anxiety surrounding, quote, "[...] the world-scale board game upon which it isn't clear who is winning or what side you are on."
5.) sustained the integrity of the subject matter inside a club context
6.) held - and survived - a berghain residency
considering that the VS origins were dom just learning to make beats during the recording of Bermuda Drain, i'm amazed that the project has developed into such a nuanced, multi-faceted exploration of media, war, foreign policy, espionage, spirituality and more...
with the emphasis of imagery in mind, i would encourage the curious to explore the visual side of VS and obtain copies of the two 2012 zines, "A Lie Must Tell A Single Story" and "Here Is Where The Story Falls Apart", and of course the zines contained within Media In The Service Of Terror and American Flesh For Violence (if budget allows...)
