DJ Sneak
Real Name:
Carlos Sosa
Profile:
One of the second wave of influential Chicago house producers and a member of the vanguard of late-'90s American house producers, DJ Sneak wasn't born in the Windy City but began listening to house soon after his family arrived from Puerto Rico in the early '80s. Because he could speak no English, Sneak gravitated to instrumental music (as well as graffiti art), and became inspired by Chicago legends such as Marshall Jefferson and DJ Pierre. Many of those early innovators had left Chicago for the East Coast by the late '80s, when Sneak was ready to start in the business; by 1992, however, Cajmere had begun a resurgence in the city's classic sound by starting up Cajual Records. Sneak aided in the revolution with a series of singles on Cajual's sister label, the harder-oriented Relief Records. Besides other productions for Strictly Rhythm, Henry St., ZYX, 83 West and Feverpitch (several of which feature Armand Van Helden on co-production, building on the Latin vibes of their heritage), DJ Sneak has also released mix compilations including 1996's Kinky Trax Collection and the following year's Buggin' Da Beats. He also worked in the Gramophone Records store in Chicago.
Founder of the independent vinyl labels Defiant (1993), Magnetic (2001) and Oomph (2002) as well as Leg (1995) for promo releases plus digital only labels Sneaks House (2008) and Sneak Tip Music (2008).
In 1995 he established his own record store called "Sneak Beats" in Toronto (Canada) which sold underground house music on Vinyl and CDs from their store and by mail order. It closed down approximately 10 years later.

Don't give a damn about internet beef. Frankly I don't care if he's a personality I will like or not. It's what comes out of them speakers and it bangs. Yeah, you can say it's just disco cut ups, but when they damage a dancefloor who is complaining?

Nothing extraordinary about this supposed 'Legend' of the house music scene! Duh! He might be a big name for some kinda people but not for those who know how is his attitude & boasting snobbish approach..nothing absolutely is even extraordinary about his music, sampling here & there, more often during the 90's period, stealing original artists music from the 80's to supposedly inventing a pathetic new genre :( This guy is a big disappointment for the house music scene!

More power to those who enjoy Sneak's music (and there are plenty of you) – but his stuff doesn't do much for me. He seems to have one trick: sample some old disco song, and loop it indefinitely over a basic house beat.

While I acknowledge that DJ Sneak is quite important to house music, I must admit though that he has one of the worst personalities of any electronic musician out there. For those who don't know, Sneak is quite active on Twitter; and by active I mean he does nothing but get himself into beefs. People who have fallen target to his rage range from commercial folks like Steve Angello and Deadmau5 to underground favorites like Joris Voorn and Seth Troxler. Anybody else who will try to question him or point out hypocrisy will only result in getting blocked (a pussy move coming from a self-described House "Gangster"). Heck, his problem is so bad he might as well be called the Kanye West of House Music, or Electronic Music as a whole.

Sneak is a house music legend. Probably my favorite house producer, and that is not something I say lightly. And he hasn't lost a step in 18 years. Hopefully there's another 18 years of sweet house brilliance to come.
