White published more than 1,500 songs. He also founded his own music publishing form, White, Smith & Perry, based in Boston. One of his most successful songs was "Marguerite" (1882), which sold more than 1,000,000 copies of sheet music. He also wrote a series of popular minstrel songs, including "I'se Gwine Back To Dixie" (1874).
