Gillham is considered one of the first crooners and a pioneer among radio artists.
Often billed as "The Whispering Pianist", a nickname given in 1924 by Lambdin Kay, general manager of radio station WSB (AM) in Atlanta.

In 1925, Gillham was one of the first artists to make an electrical recording for commercial release, recording the song "You May Be Lonesome" for Columbia.
