Cartola (1908–1980) was a Brazilian composer, singer, and guitarist, recognized as one of the most important figures in samba. Born Angenor de Oliveira in Rio de Janeiro, he was a founding member of the G.R.E.S. Estação Primeira De Mangueira samba school and played a key role in shaping the genre. His compositions, known for their poetic lyrics and sophisticated melodies, include classics such as "O Mundo É Um Moinho," "As Rosas Não Falam," and "Alvorada". Despite his early success, he spent years away from music before reemerging in the 1970s with a series of acclaimed albums. His late recordings solidified his status as a major influence on Brazilian popular music. Cartola’s work remains highly regarded, and his songs continue to be recorded by new generations of artists. He was married to Zica.
