Formed 1976 in New York, New York, by Soul Train booking agent Dick Griffey and British producer Simon Soussan. The first Shalamar release, Uptown Festival, was recorded by faceless session singers. Griffey and Soussan decided to form a group proper when that single was a success, and plucked members Jody Watley (b. 30th January 1959, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.), Jeffrey Daniel (b. 24th August 1957), and Gary Mumford that was replaced by Gerald Brown, from the Soul Train set where they were primarily dancers. Gerald Brown was replaced the following year by Howard Hewett (b. 1st October 1955 in Akron, Ohio, U.S.A.) thus completing the group's best known incarnation.

In 1983, Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel left the group for solo careers and were replaced by Delisa Davis and Micki Free. Howard Hewett left the group in 1986 to embark on his own solo career, as well as production for acts such as his then wife Nia Peeples, and was replaced by Sidney Justin. The band broke up in 1991, though Sidney Justin continued to tour with a new incarnation of Shalamar.

In 2005, Hewett and Daniel reformed Shalamar with new member Carolyn Griffey, who is the daughter of Dick Griffey and singer Carrie Lucas, and a former member of R&B duo Absolute, and they performed on the British talent show "Hit Me Baby One More Time". They did not win, but continue to tour together.

In 2015, Jody Watley acquired the trademark to the Shalamar name and began touring with new members Nate Allen Smith and Rosero McCoy. The Hewett and Daniels led reformation also continued to use the name, causing conflict between the two versions of the group.

Where and when have JODY said "Never Ever?" And when has she (Jody) sued Howard and Jeffrey for the Shalamar name, a name they themselves NEVER owned? In fact, a name Dick a Griffey (a so called businessman) failed to register. You make the accusations, but where's you proof of her stating these words? Not from a periodical, but audible! I, for one, would like to HEAR these words from her mouth and not read them from your accusations! Everyone from the beginning stages of any career are considered UNKNOWNS. Chris Brown at one time was an UNKNOWN. Rihanna at one time was an UNKNOWN. Beyonce' at one time was an UNKNOWN, and so was Howard and Jeffrey UNKNOWNS at one time, but now these two UNKNOWNS- you've labeled these two men- have become KNOWN as "Shalamar Reloaded" through their latest recordings 'SLOWDANCE' and 'O.R.I.G.I.N.A.L.' And live performances, clearly the new sound for a younger generation and not a new version of its former self. It's a NEW group. NEW faces. NEW sound and style. You called such actions of protecting ones image 'first class hypocritical' but failed to mentioned Howard, Jeffrey and Baldwin were using fist class robbery tatics stealing Jody's images just to promote their failed ticket sales for theIR UK act. @professormouse, could that 'One member of the 'Classic line-up' that was swearing VERY LOUDLY on the London Bridge that they'd never perform with this "effing group ever again....or words to that effect" had been Jeffrey? After all....he was the 1st from the classic lineup to depart, making his discomfort of being a group member and being signed to Solar record an issue in all UK publications

Jody Watley after years of saying 'Never Ever' goes & sues Howard Hewitt & Jeffrey Daniel [who WERE in the band] for the Shalamar name and allegedly 'wins' ?
I don't get it ??
Now she hires 2 total Unknowns and wheels them out as 'Shalamar Reloaded' = hmmm ???
This from a woman who managed to win a 'New Artist' award when she clearly wasn't & denies releasing records under just her first name.
When the adverts quite Clearly stated 'Formerly Of Shalamar', so if they'd been hits you woulda liked them = eh ?
I LOVED Shalamar [first band I saw live] but these action sound like those of a first class hypocrite !
Oh & V 'PC' of you guys to post pics of BOTH 'new' line-ups, I wonder what [allegedly] had one member of the 'classic' line-up swearing VERY LOUDLY on London Bridge that they'd Never perform with this 'effing group ever again...or words to that 'effect' ?
