Barry White

Real Name:
Barrence Eugene Carter
Profile:
American musician, composer, and producer born on September 12, 1944, in Galveston, Texas, died on July 4, 2003, in Los Angeles, California. He began his career as a pianist and played on Jesse Belvin's R&B hit "Goodnight My Love". At the age of 11, White made several recordings under his own name as "Barry Lee" and as a member of The Upfronts, The Atlanties, and The Majestics.

Although White had some success as a solo artist, he found greater success as a background figure and manager of other artists, including Felice Taylor and Viola Wills. In 1969, he founded Love Unlimited, a female vocal trio consisting of Diane Taylor, Glodean James (his future wife), and her sister Linda. He also founded the Love Unlimited Orchestra, a 40-piece ensemble to accompany himself and the vocal trio, providing music direction, composition, and arrangement.

At the beginning of the new millennium, White's health began to deteriorate, and he died on July 4, 2003, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 58 from kidney failure.

........"I see a world of beauty and perfection, and I strive through my music to spread that vision, to help make this planet we call home a better, more desirable place for us to love one another, to procreate, and to keep our spirits renewed." In his much anticipated memoir, Barry White, the international pop and R&B legend whose music has carried countless couples from first kisses to the walk down the aisle, takes his legendary singing voice from the airwaves to the page. With honesty, warmth, and his signature sensuality, White recounts his rough road to superstardom and shares his deepest feelings and wise philosophy. Born into the tough streets of South Central Los Angeles to a single mother, Barry ran with the "oldest, baddest, and most envied" gang and was hooked on fighting, drinking, and stealing when he wound up in Juvenile Hall at age sixteen. While behind bars, he had a life-shaking epiphany that changed the direction of his life. From that moment on Barry vowed to get and stay on a straight, hardworking path and fulfill his dream of making music. He dropped out of school and literally walked to Hollywood to make his fortune. Love Unlimited follows Barry from his hungry years as a jack of all trades, struggling to support a wife and four small children, to his first professional gig in the music business as a talent spotter; from his breakthrough producing the girls he named Love Unlimited to his own emergence into the international spotlight as a producer, songwriter, and singer renowned for his deep bass and gift for articulating the needs and desires of both men and women. At every step, the Maestro offers heartfelt reflections on self-pride and perseverance, the bonds of family and friendship, the key elements to keeping a lover happy, and the true meaning of ecstasy. Barry also explores the relationships that have inspired him--from his profound love of his mother, who bought him his first piano, his brother, who didn't have music to save him, his love Glodean, and his children, to his ultimate love, Lady Music. He also discusses his relationships with such legends and luminaries as Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Muhammed Ali, and Maxine Waters......................................

In dieser Zeit zählten "Never Gonna Give You UP", Can't Get Enough OF Your Love, Babe", "You're The First, The Last, My Everything"(1974),"What Am I Gonna Do Without You", "(For You) I'Want Me To", "Let The Music Play", "You See The Trouble Whith Me", "Baby We Better Try To Get It Togheter", "Don't Make Me Wait Too Long", "I'm Qualified To Satisfy You", " It's Extasy When You Lay Down Next To Me", das Billy Joel-Cover "Just The Way You Are" und " Sha La La Means I Love You" zu seinen großen Hits. Nach dem Break von acht Jahren setzte gegen Ende der 80er Jahre die zweite Barry White-Erfolgswelle ein. Hits wie "Sho You Right" sowie Remixe der großen Hits von "Never Never Gonna Give You Up" und "Let The Musik Play" verhalfen Barry White bis ins Jahr 2000 zur erfolgreichen Chart-Präsenz. Anno 200 erhielt er für das Album "Staying in Power" gleich zwei Grammy-Awards und übernahm in einigen Folgen der TV-Serie "Ally McBeal" Gastauftritte. Seine ersten Songs nahm der 1944 in Galveston / Texas geborene White bereits in den 60er Jahren auf. Seine 1969 ins Leben gerufene Gruppe "Love Unlimited" wuchs später zum 40 köpfigen "Love Unlimited Orchestra" heran und hatte mit "Walkin in The Rain Whith The One I Love","It May Be Winter Outside (But In My Heart it's Spring)" und "LOVE'S THEME" parallel zu Barry Whites Solokariere eigenständige Hits. Saw Barry in concert in Las Vegas mid 90s (basketball arena 20,000 seat not a casino club). Incredible show. 40 piece Love Unlimited Orchestra & Love Unlimited Singers. Arena sounded like a living room. Played everything. RIP. Now he's gone.

Love all of his music, but find it daunting that he outright REFUSED to credit his musicians! Ultimately, this is why his Drummer, Ed Greene left the band.
If you want to know who the musicians are/were on most of Barry's albums at this time, check out his string master Gene Page's solo 1974 Barry-White produced album "Hot City". There, you will see all the musicians credit, much to Barry's dismay.

The big moody and romantic soul "walrus". RIP. Great orchestration, beautifull and melodic as can be. Wether you like it or you hate it. From Gangstar to Robbie Williams, they all know to get a good sample outof his tracks. Best known for his uptempo work like "you to me are everything" and "let the music play" but there is more to discover, like his production work. As sharp as a good Dilla or Timbo track.
When you are a DJ, try to find your own piece of Barry track and end the night with it, you will see, it will work. Barry is gone, we'll mis him, but let his music play on and on and on and on.
