Don Norman & The Other Four

Don Norman & The Other Four

Possibly the most underrated band in town, Don Norman & The Other 4 were assembled from various members of The Darnels, The Esquires and The Sticks and Stones. Experience and talent were their main assets. Most of them were still in their early twenties but had been playing since the dawn of the decade. Even their seventeen-year-old drummer was a seasoned musician by the time he joined. A mutiny in The Esquires in 1965 resulted in singer Don Norman and lead guitarist Gary Comeau looking for another outlet. Their new aggregation traded in aggressive, loud, rhythm'n'blues rave-ups. The local scene never really embraced them, and for some reason, they decided to keep touring to a minimum, which reduced their chances of making it in larger markets such as Toronto and Montreal. In spite of a couple of close encounters, fame ignored them. Don Norman's autobiographical songs shed some light on their low morale. Early in 1967, he and organist Ron Greene decided to completely revamp the lineup by bringing in three members from The Bittersweet. Their strong blues influence disappeared and their sound became a lot more commercial. They played incessantly throughout the spring and summer, receiving many complimentary reviews. "Nothing To Do, No Place To Go" (included here) was to have been their fifth single but they broke up before a B-side could be recorded. These days, Don Norman & The Other 4 records are highly sought after by collectors around the world. In fact, it is safe to say that they have more fans now than they ever had when they were around!
