Studied Piano. His debut as composer was in Oslo, 1917, as pianist in 1918 and as conductor in 1928. He was a music critic for the paper Dagbladet for many years. He joined Oslo Filharmoniske Orkester in 1931, and was director artistic director and conductor in chief from 1945 till he resigned in 1961. Head of Den Norske Opera from 1961 to 1969.
