Clement "Coxsone" Dodd

Real Name:
Clement Seymour Dodd
Profile:
Born: Jan 26, 1932, Kingston, Jamaica.
Died: May 4, 2004, Kingston, Jamaica of a heart attack.

Legendary Jamaican producer, recording pioneer and music entrepreneur, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd established the famous Studio One Studio and record label at 13 Brentford Road, Kingston, in 1963 after making his name in the island's competitive sound system scenario where he would play imported records and exclusively recorded dub plates [originally on 78s] to win over the audiences. In recognition of the importance of Mr. Dodd and his studio the street was renamed by the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (the city government) to Studio One Boulevard on May 1st, 2004 from Brentford Road, four days before his sudden death.
After a handful of early outings on Down Beat (2), Dodd masterminded several labels, such as ND Records (2), C And N Records, Sabastians, Sensational, Coxsone Records, Cariboo, Wincox Records, Mu-Zik City Records, D Darling, Supreme Records (10), Rolando & Powie, Worldisc, Money Disc, and Coxson.

He was maybe a good studio owner and he has good ears but if he wasn't there, most of these great singers & musicians would go (as they did) to Duke Reid studio, Harry J, Black Ark, Channel One & many others to work with such great producers as Clancy Eccles, Witty Reid, Lee Perry, Leslie Kong, Prince Buster and many many others.

Studio One is a part of Jamaican music history, as all other island studios.

He can't be the " cornerstone" of reggae because of the big rip-off he has done as to be credited as a songwriter as he often did.
He was a great producer, a great pioneer, but he has his dark side too.

Riddims don't came from Studio One, riddims came from artists, many folks forgot that.
No artists, no riddim. No producers, no records.
Without producers, music still exists ! Art isn't money.

Whatever, thanks to Coxsone Dodd and all musicians and singers who made this music still alive today !

Was Clement "Coxsone" Dodd a genius? This is hard to say, probably not a musical genius, perhaps more a business genius or an inspiration to others. However, his towering influence over Jamaican music is unparallelled. Just take a look at this list of artists that cut their teeth at Coxsone's legendary Studio One Studios and it becomes obvious that he had something special; The Skatalites, Jackie Mittoo, Ernest Ranglin, Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, The Maytals, Marcia Griffiths, The Heptones, The Ethiopians, Burning Spear, The Abyssinians, Augustus Pablo, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Sugar Minnot, Denis Alcapone, Willie Williams, Freddie McGregor, Ken Boothe, Horace Andy, Derrick Harriot, Dennis Brown and many, many more.
