Damn good band. Although not Black Metal in anyway (despite the descriptors), it's about time someone came along and showed the scene how to shake things up. It has been a long time coming. As A BM fan myself, I can honestly say that the scene disappeared right up its own butthole in 1993 and totally failed in dragging its whimpering overhyped carcass back out again. Even the scenes initial innovators have since seen the good sense to abandon it and have only just started making credible music again, these last few years. So aye. Good on Deafheaven for producing the good balance that they have made in their music, and daring to create something that, for the most part is really rather listenable. Actually making tunes that people may want to hear eh? No wonder the "TRVE" and "KVLT" brigade are wetting their corpsepaint stained knickers over them in hate. Completely failing to see the irony in their accusations of "popularism" and "trend". I'd bet good money 90% of them weren't even born in the late 80s / early90s.. Let alone into it back then.

So glad to have seen the genre broken down and made somewhat fresh again. No matter the result. DH are obviously not going to be to everyones taste. But they know what they are doing and they play it extremely well. Can't knock a band for that. Not one bit.

Musically, they do sweep effortlessly between the really fast and aggressive and into really smooth melodic tones. I'm sure many of you out there would be able to provide a better description for where these guys actually lay in the whole "genre" spectrum. There is definately a certain "edge" present, One that spews a bizarre atmosphere that casts a very grey light on the world we live in. Their stuff tends to be beautifully produced, everything is clearly audible. Which is a rare treat for music of this tempo and as a band they are incredibly tight and technically superfluous, a genuine marvel to hear. Something which is even more astounding if you ever get the chance to see them live, or see any of their live perfomances via Youtube or something. Deafheaven pull off something which very few bands out there can. Like I said earlier, they know what they're doing and they do it very well. Drawing from a wide range of influences, which many on the web have already stated as being from Black Metal, Post-Rock and something called "Shoegaze"... OK so I'm not at all sure what that last one is, so I can't possibly comment. But the Post Rock vibe stands out like a dog on a duck farm, with the bands Black Metal influences confined comfortably to the hectic tempo and the screaming of George Clarkes' vocals.

Lyrically their words read like poetry, lost in some form of artsy drivvel that I, myself can't quite wrap my head around. But are delivered effectively enough and only add to the miasma of sound that they generate.

That's Deafheaven. Most definately a MUST for anyone who has even the remotest interest for the faster, darker and intricate side of metal. Not a band you can pigeonhole easily, as they're a bit of something and a bit more of something else, mixed in with some more something. Too dark for the pop Screamo kids and too light for the elitist snobbery of the KVLTers. But it can not be denied that whatever you see them as. They're a real good listen... Give 'em a whirl !

absolutely genius band. constantly swaying in between a gorey, extreme hellfire and a deep dark depression to want to do more with your life. people hate it because it doesn't fit a certain style or a certain aesthetic. THAT'S what metal music was supposed to destroy, the concept of bandwagoning and pretentiousness, not to create a whole new cesspool of it.

Solid record. Not cvlt enough for some but whatever. If you dig it, buy it. I'd recommend it.

It took twenty fucking years for Black Metal to be mulched into....this.
THIS is exactly what Black Metal was created to DESTROY.
This miserable, tired-sounding watered-down-to-flavorless shit makes a cup of starbucks coffee seem like a syringe full of adrenochrome concentrate. I knew how loathesome this would sound by looking at the band, who apparently lack the energy to even SULK ROBUSTLY. A halfhearted brooding is available in florid chords that don't match the screaming vocals, campfire strumming and an occasional lead reminiscent of BIG COUNTRY.
The use of the prefix "Post-" in idiomatic descriptors exists to disguise the true nature of this SHIT, which is that it emulates a (now dead) style so poorly that the limp results have more in common with some kind of INVERSE IDIOM than with the target idiom (Black Metal) it supposedly develops.
"Post Punk" means "wants to be punk but sucks too much", as does "Post Hardcore" and "Post Metal". It's a mealy, formless designation like biting into a soft apple that wants to apologize for itself but lacks THE GUTS.
To the other neophyte commentors on this profile, I would suggest that one way to determine that this SHIT MUSIC is NOT "Black Metal" is by noticing that it is SOFT and entirely UNCHALLENGING, which I am dismayed to have to inform you, are the antonyms of Black Metal which is (HOW didn't you notice?!) HARD AND INTENSE.
STAR LAND VOCAL BAND is more confrontational musically.
Yes, Black Metal has been the province of these Pea Coated dilettantes since at least 2005, so what am I on about?
I guess it just turns my stomach to see an art form about indigestible coarseness made smooth and palatable while still claiming the original properties; Do it or don't but please don't do THIS.
If you're reading this it's probably because you, (sigh), like Deef-Heavin' so let me add injury to insult; my ire is not just the byproduct of musical taste, I have concrete proof that this music is ersatz. Despite their adoption of The convention of uncoventional songform, their tonality--the melody, chord progressions, counterpoint and key--is in cloying pedestrian feel-good MAJOR KEY (or a tonic that is virtually that)-- the baby is gone and they've got you rinsing with bathwater.
Yes, I must admit that even original USBM Overlords of all that is profane, PROFANATICA, have used major chords occasionally, but it is always in triumph OVER THE ANODYNE rather than catering to it. On the other side of the fence that Daefheaven attempts to straddle is MY BLOODY VALENTINE; but when they proved that sonic opiation can soothe even at a bruising amplitude it was a maverick gesture in the context of their musicological enviroment.
For fans of --and fans that ARE-- Weakling.

There is no denying Deafheaven kicks major ass...But is it me the only one to notice a sickening resemblance to Wolves In The Throne Room?
I mean come on boys and girls it's there for all to see..There is nothing new under the sun,and the amazing part is that Deafheaven have reached other audiences that WITTR simply by beeing lebeled as "post" or whatever by some industry jack asses or some "open minded" fans that see "post" as an elegant term to throw around just to sound intelectual...Open your eyes..It is black metal, nothing more.
