Clock DVA

One of the original groups in the formation of the Sheffield Electronic Scene in the early 78 to 80's period. Clock DVA's first Audio releases were on cassette only, a 12 Vinyl EP was recorded for release on the label Cherry Red Entitled "Sex Works Beyond Entanglement" which remained unreleased until it was produce in the 6 x 12 Lp album set of all CDVA Cassette releases as HOROLOGY I, a Folder released by Label Vinyl on Demand containing additional 7 / 45 Vinyl, DVD and 28 page full colour Art Booklet. A recent 5 album box set of music HOROLOGY II, has also been released which covers the formative experimental electronic period of Adi Newtons work after his departure from the electronic Trio THE FUTURE who later developed into The Human League a LP of the Future Recordings featuring Adi Newton is included along side an extensive Biographical full LP size Booklet. The first official Clock DVA release was by invitation from Throbbing Gristle on there Industrial Records label. The cassette-only (until its re-release in 1982) "White Souls In Black Suits" features Founder members Adi Newton (Vocals, Violin, EMS Synthi E, Tapes (the Studs; The Future, Veer, Tape)), Stephen James "Judd" Turner (bass, vocals, treatments, rhythm machine, ex-Block Opposite), and the original guitarist David J. Hammond (guitar / Treatments). Two additional musicians where added to the line up for that Album / Group, Roger Quail (drums) and Charlie Collins (Alto / Tenor / Baritone, Soprano, saxophones, Flute and Percussion). The first Formalised DVA line up also featured Simon Mark Elliot-Kemp Synthesiser.
In 1981, David J Hammond left and guitarist Paul Widger joined in 1980. The Album "Thirst" was produced by Psychic TV producer Ken Thomas and released through independent Record label Fetish, cited as one of the great Albums of the 80's along side Joy Divisions "Unknown Pleasures" and The Falls "Dragnet" by the NME Journalist Paul Morley the album received high critical acclaim and respectable sales. After THIRST, Newton / Turner decided to take Clock DVA into another direction and parted company with Qual / Collins / Widger, who consequently formed the short lived group The Box. Tragedy struck later with the death of co-founder Stephan James Turner. Newton remained as founder by 1983, replacements had been found in John Valentine Carruthers (guitar), Paul Browse (saxophone), Dean Dennis (bass) and Nick Sanderson (drums). A brace of singles prefaced "Advantage", their first album for Polydor Records. The following year Carruthers and Sanderson departed, although sometime later Clock DVA would continued as a trio. Though it would be five years before a follow-up, Newton was kept busy with his Audio Visual Conceptual project The Anti Group (TAGC) which Researched and Developed Ambisonics and Psychoacoustics and experimental use of Frequencies and ambient acousmatic sound pieces along side visual and conceptual text pieces The Album, The Delivery a Soundtrack Album for the TAGC 16 mm film, a series of 12/45 Discs including Documents and the acclaimed Ambisonic Album Digitaria and the pioneering Meontological Research Recordings where released, also the Sound track to Burning Water a 25 min TAGC Film. In 1988 "Buried Dreams" was recorded utilising the first Digital sampling Synthesisers and Computer sequencing which Newton had been experimenting with in TAGC, pioneered a new Electronic Sound released in 1989 by Interfisch, considered by many journalists as a Masterpiece. By the time of 1991's "Transitional Voices", Browse had been replaced by Robert E. Baker, of TAGC. The departure of Dennis after the completion of "Man Amplified" and "Digital Soundtracks" in 1992 left the remaining duo of Newton and Baker to record "Sign" which where released on the Italian Record Label Contempo.

After some 15 years of silence, Adi Newton reactivated Clock DVA. Since 2011 the new line-up (feat. Maurizio "TeZ" Martinucci) has performed at major Independent Electronic festivals and venues throughout Europe. "Horology I / II", a vinyl box set compilation of early material (1978-1980) (see above) was released 2012. Mute Records have signed all the rights of the CDVA back catalog which will eventually be re-released in the near future as a New Studio Album is being produced from recordings made in Amsterdam and EMS Stockholm 2016 and will be released prior to the re-issue by Mute.
A "new" album, "Post-Sign", was released 2013; this album was recorded in 1994/95 by Newton as an instrumental companion album to "Sign", but remained unreleased at the time due to problems with an Italian record label after Contempo's demise. "Clock 2", a Printed Aluminium USB Smart media Card in Printed Metal box was released with all new material plus remixes by ATOM, Scanner, Frank Bretschneider and also features several videos by Pannos Tomaras and a 48 page PDF was release in 2014, as well as a limited Silk Screen Double sleeve 12" 45 of The Konstructor / De Konstructor with two DVA remixes, both through Newton's own label Anterior Research Media Communications _ Including a new Exclusive 3 Track Minimax CD EP "NEOTERIC" has also been released in 2016.

There is something about the introspectiveness and experimentation on Clock DVA's art that is really fascinating. The obscure perspective was unique - specially on "Buried Dreams", among the highest standards for avant-garde electronic music albums ever.
It's amazing how this English formation could blend the tastes of minimal ("Transitional Voices", "Sound Mirror"), experimental ("Sonology Of Sex", "The Unseen"), introspectiveness ("The Reign, Velvet Realm"), with sensuality (on "Buried Dreams", the most sexy vanguardist music you could imagine), melted with a natural sense of darkness.

"Transitional Voices" and "The Reign" were real dancefloor anthems on the underground Industrial / EBM clubs in São Paulo in 1990-1991, thanks to connaisseurs such as DJ Magal and Mellão from Muzik.

Clock DVA remains an essential Electronic Act of the Avant-Garde Electronica, just like groups such as Cabaret Voltaire, Klinik, Tangerine Dream, Model 500, Kraftwerk & Riuichi Sakamoto.

Clock DVA's Buried Dreams album is the #1 soundtrack to my darkest sexual pleasures & fantasies. If you like dark sexy machine made music this album must not be overlooked. There has not been one girl I've played this album for that did'nt feel the same way. Highly recommended!

Clock DVA evolved from their early electronics/avant garde collective into a more sophisticated electronics/avant garde collective only with a virtual difference to once a more conventional line-up. Obsessions with science and social deviance made their sound go for various debates whether the group were self-indulging in the wake of Kraftwerk as the closest comparison but their influence is just as huge. They cut their own path and we should hail them for their music is some of the most uncompromising statement of the modern age.
