A Lord. This is the most heard definition of this bald, skinny artist, when you ask in Brazilian club scene. Renato Lopes took an extremely important place in underground dance music explosion in Brazil, beginning in the second half of eighties, with his residences at Nation Disco Club and Sra Krawitz Club, among others. He was one of the first local DJs to play the tracks that were being noticed in Europe like the new Dance Music, the new Techno. It was a revolution for the Brazilian ears at that time. Some of the most important gigs in early nineties had Mr. Lopes leading it, like Sra. Krawitz Christmas Party at Galpão Paparazzi, downtown São Paulo, in a disaffected bread shop. It was the Brazilian version of London ´s squat parties, a very new party concept for all of us.
Renato ´s residence at Latino Club was always surrounded by an uplifted ambiance, with a feeling that a new time has started in São Paulo club scene. The Hell ´s Club after hours came to consolidate this period of deep changes. With DJ Mau Mau at his side, Renato Lopes performed several times as a guest in this club that would change so many lives. This notorious Soul got a huge recognition of the readers of “Folha de São Paulo” Newspaper: they elected him the best Brazilian DJ for three years in a row.
He was present in every important moment of Brazilian electronic culture, like one of the first underground dance music radio performing, one of the first DJ agencies and the first Internet Café with DJ schedule in São Paulo. A question of excellence!

One of the first opportunities I had to see Renato Lopes and Mau Mau playing together was in the Universo Ago-Go of Dance Arte Project that took place on the majestic club Columbia, on tuesday, 27 july, 1993.
The Dance Arte nucleus was organized by the trio Cesar Semensato, Daniel Almeida and Fram Bogdzevicius, and this was a very special edition, with the two of our best underground DJs, the live from Orangofunk band, with a kind of an alternative fashion show on the lower floor - all presented by a very funny (and fat) drag queen.
At that period, DJ Renato Lopes was a synonym for ‘ahead-of-our-time’ - he, Marquinhos MS and Mau Mau belonged to a group of very few professionals that really defined the parameters of electronic music in São Paulo. His repertories were composed of all the new flavors of House, Techno, Progressive, Breakbeats, Trance, and whatever you can imagine of underground dance music, as you can guess there was absolutely no obligation of playing mono-style sets at the beginning of the last decade.
The other historical night I saw these two great DJs together was in the 1993 Christmas party of Sra. Krawitz at the Galpão Paparazzi, where Renato played just before Mau Mau (but I’ll comment that one another day).

It’s impossible to talk about electronic music in Brazil without mentioning the name of Renato Lopes. In all these almost twenty years of brilliant career, he has been inspiring a large number of DJs and producers all over the brazilian scene. This pioneer soul boldly engaged himself very early on an avant-garde party concept during his residency at Nation Club at the end of the eighties being one of the first to consolidate a House-driven night in São Paulo.
Mostly at the same time, Renato Lopes was part of the band ‘Que Fim Levou O Robin’ with Mauro Borges, but he also was behind the Nova FM program station called “Nova Dance” in the beginning of the last decade, influencing a whole new generation with deep electronic culture.
Through his visionary character and his deep musical researches, Renato transformed himself in a major reference of the brazilian scene (between 1992 and 1994, Renato was elected three times in a row champion as the best brazilian DJ by Noite Ilustrada of Folha de São Paulo Newspaper).
During his professional journey, he got the residencies of historical club nights such as the ones of Malícia, the Dance Arte project at Columbia, and later the Latino Club (including the fact that he was regularly invited to the legendary Hell’s Club after hours, among others).
A real pioneer.
