Simon Posford and Raja Ram are Shpongle, a psychedelic ambient project formed in 1996 after they met at Butterfly Studios in Brixton, South London. Simon was working on Purple Om and Raja Ram was working with Graham Wood on The Infinity Project. The two went to the Glastonbury festival and decided to write something downtempo after their experience and Shpongle was born.

The Shpongle sound is a mix of mainly eastern ethnic samples and western contemporary psychedelic synth music. Posford is responsible for the synth and studio work while Raja Ram contributes with flute arrangements and creative sensibilities.

Now these guys are awesome! Raja Ram & Simon Posford are such masterminded producers who create soundscapes transcending all forms of barriers! Their music is psychedelic with a touch of oriental and ethnic beats! All their albums are a must have! My fav remains Are You Shpongled?, they are just amazing in every way possible! They can't be rivaled! They are the best!

Been buying shpongle stuff for years and finally got to see them live here in Melbourne 06/12/13, well Raja Ram Anyway, well i got way too wasted and spent the whole night in a kind of non comprehending stupor, total fuckin bummer really!!!

A word on their music, Shpongle are the only producers I know of who are daring enough to vary the tempo's in their tunes, whilst 99.9% of pruducers make music at the same rigid tempo's, Simon & Raja may start a track at say 105bpm & then half way through they may change to a galloping 140bpm, this is just an example of course, but if you check out albums like Tales of the inexpressible or their 2001 release The Sixth Revelation you will hear some awesome termpo changes.
Tempo changes aside their music is so fucking easy to listen to whether your straight, stoned as fuck or tripping of your brain but bahh fuck it,substances always make the listening better!!, with Raja on the Flutes & Simon providing some truly great guitar work, especially on tracks like Beija Flor. & there is enough diversity in their albums to satisfy even the most demanding listeners plus the cover art is a bonus as well.

Where to begin? The Shpongle duo are veteran musicians which need no further introduction. They took the psybient genre into a new direction and set new standards with their first album. Since then they were virtually reinventing themselves which each new album: the trancey music of Tales Of and and extreme diversity of Nothing Lasts. Even though a large portion of their melodies and lines are taken from sample collection and known songs, the way they combine it all into one harmonic piece is simply brilliant.
Even people who do not generally listen to psychedelic music find this music wonderful - especially the second album since it is the most musical and "beautiful".
Unfortunately Nothing Lasts is their last album - and we can only hope they will come back with another name in the future.
