Considering his pedigree, the relatively anonymous Arthur Smith can be hailed as an unsung hero when it comes to creatively craft beats and bass in the electronic music sphere.
Starting mid-90s, he has a quite limited output, most of which belongs to the 'secret weapons' dancefloor category, would it be trippy offbeat techno (Grain, Santo Rodriguez), post-Detroit monster (AJ Sound's "Basemental"), UK garage or more bassy dubstep developments (he practically invented the genre with his "Red EP" under the Artwork monicker in 2002, and contributed discovering two of the biggest names on the scene, Skream and Benga, through his confidential but super cult Big Apple Records imprint).
And although some could point a more 'commercial' direction with the Magnetic Man project (together with fellows Skream and Benga), it is a fairly deserved one, and on that level of dedication, continuity in epoch-discerning and duration in quality output, ability to squeeze between several styles ; combined with personal discretion (one of the key notions in the 'house nation' aesthetics, remember kids?), i only see a very few names able to test him on a world wide level, that are still musically relevant in 2010 : perhaps Wolfgang Voigt, Tadd Mullinix, Josh Brent, Jamal Moss, Daniel Bell, Colin McBean, Terrence Dixon, Rene Pawlowitz, Norm Talley, the Smith'n'Hack guys and not many more.
Hats off to a true visionary!
