Allan is from Dunedin, where he started playing guitar at 15. He went to Australia in the early 60s and played clubs and cabaret. Returned to New Zealand in 1967 and started the A.Q. Trio. Merged with Dick Hopp to form the Blue Note Quartet. Allan moved to Auckland in 1969 and has played every conceivable restaurant and cabaret gig. Musicians say he is the greatest jazz guitarist New Zealand has produced so far.
