Totally underrated US dreamy psych folk gem. It opens in a pleasing way with full orchestral strings played low and romantically, then enters (by fade in might i add) the wistful strummed acoustic guitar, followed closely by Lightmans youthful solitary voice. A voice that reminds me of Jake Holmes and with a Townes Van Zandt attitude.
It has all the elements of a solid contemporary Folk record. The sweet guitars, the soft strings that twirl around the words which contain little pearls of wisdom and wit throughout the stories. But what sets this record apart are the interludes.
In between each track is a beautifully composed orchestral snippet of music that introduces or concludes each track. Think Nick Drakes 'Hazy Jane II' on Bryter Layter, but sewn between each song, giving the whole thing from start to finish a sense of sophistication and leaves me thinking that this artist has a musical ability and maturity well beyond his 20 years.
Sometimes poignant, sometimes rockin' (with band), this album covers the full scope of styles and sounds that were being explored by the early 70's Singer/Songwriters with enough quirk and sophistication to stand alone and be totally original.
Well, an essential album also recommended to Pearls Before Swine (Reprise era) affecionados.
This is a pure genuine masterwork!
