With soaring harmonies, solid songwriting abilities, and a flair for romantic ballads, The Association deserved their place in popular music with a string of hits from 1966-68. Formed in Los Angeles, California in March 1965, the six-man band consisted of guitarist/composer/arranger Gary Alexander, guitarist/drummer Ted Bluechel, bassist Brian Cole, front men/guitarists Russ Giguere and Jim Yester, and singer/composer Terry Kirkman.

A favourite on the college circuit, The Association's debut single was a cover version of Bob Dylan's "One Too Many Mornings." It was followed by "Along Comes Mary," which made the Top 10 in July 1966. With its exquisite vocal blend and sweeping sentimentality, "Cherish" topped the charts in September of that year. "Windy," an engaging paean to a free-spirited femme, was penned for the band by a 19-year-old fan and also made number 1, where it stayed for a month in June 1967. "Never My Love" (September 1967), a song that began one thousand love affairs, was another quintessential Association ballad and a number two hit. "Everything That Touches You" (their last Top 10 item) charted in March 1968.

The Association, in between the hits, discovered a whole range of musical styles, a plethora of which can be heard on their 1968 greatest-hits album, released in November of that year. For example, "The Time It Is Today," "Requiem for the Masses" and "Enter the Young" are originals with a sharp social edge, while the band expressed a range of emotions from wry to bittersweet with tunes like "Like Always," "Time for Livin'" (a Top 40 hit), "No Fair at All" and "We Love Us" (erroneously titled "We Love"). The Association proved the long-lasting value of solid lyrics, memorable melodies and sincere sentiments in an era of rampant musical change.
