D.O.P.E. is an acronym for 'Defenders Of the Planet Earth'. Owners of Rugged Vinyl Records. Prior to that Ray Stanley worked at Passion records down in the basement of Mash (Clothing) shop on Oxford Street, London, and Ben James worked for the distributors, SRD.

D.O.P.E. were initially poised to be signed to XL Recordings, however, they ran into sample clearance issues with Supertramp for the vocal samples on D.O.P.E. - When I Was Young (Original Mix) / Richard's First Trip. Due to further disagreements with the direction XL wanted to push the group, D.O.P.E. felt inclined to press ahead themselves with the When I was Young Remixes and form the Rugged Vinyl label.
