Nobody got anything to say about Spirit? Ok, I'll start.

The first Spirit album I ever bought was Farther Along which was a massive mistake as it's one of their worst releases. It's really incredibly bland and, in the middle of punk when I bought it, of no use to me at all. I listened to it a few times as money was tight and it was unfortunate to waste money on bad records. I sold it on pretty quickly.

Anyway - that's the bad news .... the good news is that Spirit made a run of great albums from 1968 to 1975, and I'm sure there's some pleasure to be found in later releases but I only go as far as Future Games (A Magical-Kahauna Dream) and that's it.

They were ahead of their times with the eco-awareness of Fresh Garbage:
'Look beneath your lid some morning
See those things you didn't quite consume
The world's a can for your fresh garbage".

Brilliant lyrics. All those early albums have great songs but my all-time favourite is probably Victim Of Society off Spirit of 76.
Some people don't like that era of Spirit, preferring the 68 - 70 period. Fair enough - when all's said and done The Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus is their most consistent but Spirit of 76 has a ton of imaginative cover versions, great originals and some sublime playing.

I saw Spirit in 1978 at the Reading Festival. I wish I could remember more about it, alas time has erased the memory.
