Amon Tobin

Real Name:
Amon Adonai Santos de Araújo Tobin
Profile:
Brazilian electronic artist.

Born: 7 February 1972 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

Tobin started off under the pseudonym of Cujo in the mid 1990s, whilst living in Brighton, UK. This alias lived for a series of singles, EPs, and remixes, peaking with the album "Adventures In Foam" (1996), all originally on NINEBARecords, and appeared first in the US on the label Shadow Records. In late 1996, he switched to going by an abbreviation of his own name and signed to the UK label Ninja Tune, where he has resided until 2015's Dark Jovian. Since 2019, he has released on his own label, Nomark Records.

Tobin's recordings have grown from solo creations to collaborations to the point of having a variety of artists help weave live instruments into his latest albums. His live shows, like his music creations, have also evolved over time and appeared in many TV programmes, along with film, and computer games alike.

After living in the Brighton, UK for a long period, in 2002 he moved to Montreal, Canada, living in the industrial Old Montreal area to avoid noise complaints after dark. In 2008, Tobin again moved, following new horizons in San Francisco, California, USA.

I have to disagree with ante00 below. Listen to anything on the wonderful album called "Long Stories".
Or to that brilliantly introverted, almost otherworldly new track by Amon's latest alias: Stone Giants.

Amazing stuff, really.

Dark Jovian was Amon Tobin's last great work. All the newest 'Nomark' releases have completely lost me; I feel that leaving Ninja Tune was a very bad decision as any sense of direction and guidance is gone, and it's clearly reflected in the music.

Dudes obviously open to creative ideas when it comes to making music. If anyone can throw a curve ball it's this dude, but so can many others. It's a shame you don't heard about him anymore... Last i've heard of him was on the Noisia EP.

A fearless pioneer of experimental IDM; the alchemist of modern sound design.

This is perhaps Coil's heir but only in the sense that he has followed his own way and has discovered the way to the incredible world of impossible sounds, outstanding combinations and breaking fearlessly into the unconventional.
This guy redeems the nature of electronic music into the category of the exotic till the point the listener gets really mindblowed by the beauty, the detail, the madness or the deepness, the strength or the shadow in equal dosage. An alchemist of sound, a true modern composer of high rank.

Been one of my favorite artists since Cujo in the 90's. Saw him live in 00' in California. So, as everyone knows, this alone makes my opinion more valid and important than the artist himself.

Since ISAM, I can't say I know exactly what the hell Amon Tobin is doing anymore. Most of his tracks no longer have any cohesiveness. Rather, they're blip-happy (see Dr. Rockit) and with non-stop transitions. Once they begin to take you to that blissful, tranquil place in your imagination that you know so well, they backstab and jar you. Then you feel hollow and disappointed, like balls of blue.

His latest creations since Foley Room (which was an obvious experimental venture) have stemmed some sort of mania of transitional sound that I'm not sure I can dig into. Here is hoping he takes another turn in his experimentation for the better, because we all know he's capable, we all know his versatility, and we all know what an underground gem he has always been.

I don't know much about Amon Tobin, hell only have 3 of his albums, but I know this much about Amon Tobin. He is out there on his own, doing his own thing and I used to think that the "cutting edge" in electronic music had long been gone and passed, but everytime I hear a tune or a sound that has passed through this man's hands, all hear is the "cutting edge".
The "cutting edge" in terms of how musicians produce music in this day age might be over, but it definitely still exists in Amon Tobin's head.

Amon Tobin is one of the most amazing artists i've ever heard. Tobin interweaves samples in a dramatic and mindboggling manner (see Marine Machines, or just about any track from 'Out, From Out Where'), his skill is unparallelled. After listening to one of his later albums (OFOW, or Supermodified.. the earlier albums are brilliant but mainly drum 'n' bass) you'll be convinced Tobin has created an entirely new genre, the drum 'n' bass /industrial influence is heavy but there is simply no one genre out there that can define his work ...in short Tobin is groundbreaking.
