Sasha

Real Name:
Alexander Paul Coe
Profile:
British DJ and producer.

Born: 4 September 1969 in Bangor, Gwynedd, Wales, UK.

A well-renowned DJ and production figure in trance and progressive house circles, Sasha became famous in the late 1980s and early 1990's for residencies at clubs like Shelley's (Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England), The Hacienda (Manchester, England), and most notably Renaissance ("Venue 44" in Mansfield, England; later "The Conservatory", Derby, England). At Renaissance, he formed a now famous longterm DJ partnership with John Digweed (as Sasha & John Digweed), one continued for many years, and they produced the first major commercially released studio-produced DJ mix "Renaissance: The Mix Collection" (1994) – now largely considered a pioneering release of its time.

In the early-to-mid 1990s, he produced several productions of his own and did remixes for Urban Soul, M People, Creative Thieves, and the Pet Shop Boys, amongst others. In 1999, he formed a new partnership in the studio with Charlie May (one half of Spooky) and released the "Xpander EP" (1999), and the full-length album "Airdrawndagger" (2002).

In 1997 he founded and ran the now defunct Excession label, later followed in 2007 by emFire, a new label for his own recordings. In late 2011 he launched his new digital imprint Last Night On Earth.

his remix on Larry Heard's "Closer" stood the test of time the most of his early productions. Unlike his QAT stuff which is more of epic house epoch of 15 minutes lengthy tracks with diva vocals, that style is long gone.

I remember it as though it were yesterday. Sitting in the family kitchen one miserable January night. Top of the Pops blaring from a portable TV in the corner.

'This is the one I wanted to see!' I exclaimed excitedly. And there appeared Sasha and Maria Nayler performing 'Be As One' (I had hurried to Our Price earlier in the week to purchase the cassette single). I recall the look of bemusement on my parents' faces as Sasha played a pretend keyboard and Maria did some awkward wavy-hand dance thing.

'Utter bilge' and 'complete drivel' were sentiments that emanated from my folks' mouths, when they finally recovered the power of speech. But I knew better. I knew a timeless, genre-defining, vastly innovative, consciousness-altering musical journey when I heard it.

This was Sasha's apotheosis, 'Xpander' notwithstanding. It is haunting and endless and ethereal and serene. Elfin Maria Nayler was the perfect choice for the vocals. It is subliminal and sublime. I can't think of sufficient gobshite superlatives, in all honesty.

Regrettably, I never heard 'Be As One' it in a club for I was but a greasy, priapic, adolescent oik at the time of its release. And it probably wasn't the type of thing they'd play at Brannigan's or the Ritzy or whatever chain-hovels my provincial backwater had to offer.

Not many djs can build a room as perfectly, no matter how sideways he might have been he was always flawless. In 93 whilst in Australia (Elevation in Perth I think) a sneaky promoter hooked up not one but two tape decks to record his set the first tape deck was fairly obvious with a bit of looking but the second was hidden deep in the back & I watched Alex find both and stop them during the opening minutes of his set. I would also like to mention that Tom Frederikse had a huge hand in Sasha's early days.

Sasha is to djing what Plato is to philosophy, what Pele is to football, what led zeppelin are to rock....a harbinger, precursor, a forerunner, above everything else.....a living legend. Sasha was born in 1969 in North Wales UK. Became famous in the late 80's and early 90's for residencies at clubs like Shelly's, the Hacienda, and most notably Renaissance. At Renaissance, formed a now-famous DJ partnership with John Digweed which continues to the present day. In the early- to mid-90's, turned out several productions of his own and did remixes for Urban Soul, M People, Creative Thieves and the Pet Shop Boys, among others. In 1999, he formed a new partnership in the studio with Charlie May (one half of Spooky) and released the "Xpander" EP, and in 2002, the full-length album "Airdrawndagger". In 1997 he founded and ran the now defunct Excession label. In 2007 he started emFire, a new label for his own recordings. In late 2011 he launched his new digital imprint Last Night On Earth, his glittering CV is endless, it speaks for itself.

Sasha may of been influenced by Autechre.
Look at my comments on Xpander EP, 3 Little Piggys.
I'm wandering what everyone else thinks.

He's no longer one of the biggest players in the industry, but he has quite the list of accomplishments. Few DJs will ever match his success.

I have been a fan since day one and I can't agree more with most of the comments about "the man like" but considering his career was built on those mix tapes from the likes of Shelleys and the Eclipse surely its time for Sasha to dust down his italian imports and stick on a proper oldskool night. I can assure you that is one night that would be sold out over and over again. So come on Sasha get up in the loft and get them tunes out!!

I'm more of a techno aficianado, but admittedly, this guy can play a set like no other. On his good nights, he is not to be missed. Absolutely one of the best at blending those tracks into one indistinguishable wave of sound, even before the advent of all those digital add-ons.
Production wise - he needs help. But when he gets help, the tracks are good. The Xpander EP is a standout.

DJ Sasha... Manchestorr... The Guy is a Genuine Legend. Longevity in the rat race which is the International DJ Circuit proves that on its own.
The Early Sasha Tapes.. Still played to death today. Sasha @ the Eclipse, The Hacienda, Shelly's, Angels, Kinetic & Kaos.. All Mint. The Blend of the Italian Imports, rush creating accapellas with the UK house really was a golden age of The Scene for me, and a Blue print that lives on in the Northwest and Northeast even still today.
His ear for a Tune is impeccable.. Just look through his late 80s early 90s playlist on here and look how sought after and valuable nearly every tune is. His taste has really stood the test of time. It has kept 1000s of us Marvelling at his quality for over 20 years.
Maybe his production IS better when he is collaborating, but lets not forget he is first and foremost a DJ.. and in my opinion the Best There Was , the best there is and the best there will ever be. A total crowd pleaser and Genius.
So here's to A Man Like DJ Sasha... The DON!!
