"Leo had many 'firsts' in his career. He may have been the first bandleader to use Negroes in his orchestra -- on both theatre and recording dates. Benny Goodman usually receives credit for being the first to integrate his band, having put pianist Teddy Wilson on his payroll in 1936. But Reisman featured Johnny Dunn in his 1928 Symphony Hall concert and a year later hired "Bubber" Miley for some recording sessions. Miley also played the Paramount Theatre with Reisman in 1931. Dressed as an usher, Miley came down the aisle playing St. Louis Blues, and halted at the stage where he concluded his solo which always stopped the show." Dan Langan's sleeve notes to Leo Reisman, Vol.1 released by RCA Victor Vintage Series, 1969.
