Chris.Su

Real Name:
Krisztián Kovács
Profile:
As one of the commanding producers and DJs in the Hungarian scene, Chris.SU among others has put his country on the map of drum and bass. His first international break through was the track “Astro-Sine” with the well-known techno-sample “My house is your house”, in 2002 on Trace’s label DSCI4. Since then, his tracks enjoy the support of drum and bass’ finest, from Klute to Ed Rush, Concord Dawn, Pendulum, Ill.Skillz, BSE, Bailey, Flight, D-Bridge, Matrix, Teebee, Dieselboy and Andy C. Raised in a small city one hour drive from the capital of Hungary, Budapest and trained from the age of 7 as a classical cellist, Chris soon found himself edging away from the traditional music and getting into electronic music. As soon as he got his first PC in 1996, he immediately started making music in various genres such as hardcore techno and house.

By the end of 1997 one of Chris’ schoolmates, who is today an editor of the Hungarian drum’n’bass website ImpulseCreator gave him a compilation CD to listen to it, which was one his first dnb experiences. After a few months listening to the “new” style, he started visiting parties, too. Chris remembers the Bad Company gig in 1999 as one of his first big inspirations to start making dnb himself. By that time ImpulseCreator has launched a new page called ‘Music for your ears’, where inexperienced producers could upload their new tunes.

A bit baffling that Chris has been in the game for basically decades and most of his output has been pretty remarkable, but he has no full album releases. F.A.T.E., released on Subtitles in 2012, was supposed to be one, but I guess it was exiled to a single release.

In case anyone wonders where the moniker comes from. I mean the Chris part is pretty obvious (Krisztián is Hungarian for the first name Christian), but the SU tag... uhm, is kind of a funny story that is well known in the Hungarian scene (at least among those who care about the stories, bloopers and trifles behind artists and tracks), but seemingly unknown outside of it. When Chris was attending high school, his friends and social circles were an embodiment of single teenagers who, for the better part of their time, played video games and surfed the internet at home, thus were not particularly lucky in terms of women, well, teenage girls.

Not a particularly great picture, right? Well, they were aware of this as well. The universal terms used by the youth for such people, as we all know, are "loser" or "sucker". When they created an e-mail distribution group to discuss matters and everyday problems of life and things (we are not in the Facebook nor MSN/AIM era, keep in mind distribution lists were rather huge prior to the instant messaging days), they went with the self-deprecating title Suckers United™. Note Chris isn't the only musician of said group: you also have Flack.su and ib.su (who does not appear to be present on discogs so I cannot link him, however he introduced Chris to drum and bass in the mid-90s and worked in Deep, one of the best record stores in Budapest).

Chris did admit in an interview in 2012 that had he majored in a different genre, he probably would have used another moniker. By the way, the whole SU thing is not really applicable anymore, the guy is happily married.

Long live Hungarian drum and bass! Chris, if you happen to read this, tell your buddy SKC and crew Tactile (2) to come back to the scene!
