Interesting little tidbit of information on the production of the sounds of the PG Sounds 12"s here - http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?2410 - the device used is called 'The Powerhouse' which is a rather obscure four track tape machine made in Scotland in the 70s. A combination of this tape machine, organs, synths and some additional percussion are used; no MIDI arrangements. I suppose that's why the records sound so loose and hazy.
