Iwa Sörenson

Iwa Sörenson from Göteborg, Sweden, was engaged as soloist at the Royal Opera in Stockholm between 1979 and 2001, and also trained as singing teacher and organist. In her hometown she made an early debut as a concert singer, and after the Opera School she became a soloist at the Music Theater in Malmö. Her debut was Norina in Don Pasquale in April 1978. In 1979 she sang Adele in The Bat, as the last role before moving to Stockholm. The successful portrayal of the lisping, slightly stupid captain´s daughter Josephine in HMS Pinafore made her known to the Stockholm audience.

At the Royal Opera she performed such roles as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Fiordiligi in Così Fan Tutte, Violetta in La Traviata, Musetta in La Bohème and Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier.

As a concert singer she has performed much contemporary music, "Lied" repertoire and oratorio.

A large production of recordings, mainly during the 80's, has rendered her three Swedish Gramophone Awards.

As a freelancing singing teacher she works at the University of Uppsala with interpretation of art song. There have been four courses containing a varied repertory. In November 2007 she visited University of North Florida, USA,giving a masterclass with the singing students .
Recently she gave a lecture in Spanish about Swedish art song as well as masterclass. She was invited by the Spanish Association of Singing Teachers.

In recent years, she has been member of various boards, as the board of the University College of Opera, VoTS (Voice Teachers of Sweden, the magazine "Opera", Röstfrämjandet and "Ordet och Tonen", a group that works to promote art song.
