He first was trumpet soloist for The London Philharmonic Orchestra and later for the BBC Symphony Orchestra. In the age of 37, he decided to leave the orchestra and to focus solely on composition. Additionally to his classical compositions, he wrote more than 80 scores and soundtracks, the best known of them being the score of The Bridge On The River Kwai.
