For me personally James Holden is (was) one of the most innovative and intelligent progressive trance producer ever. For me his mid 2000's tracks alongside with early Max Graham (Airtight!), Airwave ,M.I.K.E. and Oliver Lieb works really well represent this genre. Just listen to his remix of Solid Session's "Janeiro" or his " Come To Me (Club Mix)

I just feel the need to express my views on James Holden. He is one of my all time favorite artists, along with Tiesto, Armin, Sasha, Digweed, PvD. Most of the people who are into this kind of music have heard of all the artists I mentioned, except for James Holden. I think he is way underrated. Tracks like Nothing (both original and especially 93 returning mix), Horizons, Eternity and so on.. those tracks are world class, yet so few people have listened to them. It's a shame, he should've been rich like Tiesto if it was a fair world, he made the world a better place for me.
Also, I don't like his new stuff, it's a shame he doesn't make progressive anymore. I really hope he gets back to it at some point, it would be a dream.

The sound of needle falling on a piece of cotton has been going on for too long...
Dear Holden, please return to dance music.

So much respect for James Holden. Kaern Turned, Britney Spears, Depeche Mode, Break In The Clouds, Put Out The Light, and Solstice immediately come to mind when his name pops up. Its obvious that the glitchy idm stuff isnt really getting it done anymore. New Border Community releases are unfortunately becoming less and less relevant as time passes, although I am aware some of them are still difficult to get in physical format.
To James: Rather than quietly fade out of the scene on the experimental/boundary pushing music, I think its time to give the people what they want. Progressive House as most of us know it is well over a decade old now. If you started releasing newly created progressive that sounds club friendly as your old Border Community releases do, it would actually be very much in contrast to the way the main dance trends are heading right now which is towards slowness, dubby instrumentals, nu disco. If I could influence your direction without imposing on your artistic style, I say bring some classic/vocal prog back and write some more brilliant melody. It would be incredibly refreshing even for most of your original fans who are probably in their late 20's to mid 30's by now. We are still here and still listening. You still have fans everywhere wishing you could take us back to the way that you used to do it. I know those tunes are boring to you but I personally still listen to a lot of those vinyls on a regular basis. Please bring back the melodic tunes built for big wide open spaces, if not for your own sake, please do it for us. The world would be a better place to live in.

He's kind of overrated. He has a lot of fans who somewhat exaggerate his talent and try to validate even his more lackluster and mediocre works.

From my point of view this man has had a big impact on dance music. In 2003 he got away from "progressive" music, and started to focus on tech-house. At first there were his own tracks like "A Break In The Clouds" were a combination of quality production, good melody and emotion and experiment. And secondly he was able to find fantastic producers, who weren't well known, to release gems for his own label Border Community. Doing that he set a standard for quality tech house we saw in the following years. Also his "progressive" tracks, especially "Nothing" are fantastic. The only problem is that since he stopped making progressive music, we hear very little about him.

First James Holden was a pure progressive artist. Since 2005 he created a wider vision of music and since that moment I was addicted to his music. There are so many different styles in his sets. Influences of ambient, electro, IDM, (tech)house, techno and many more. But he picks out the right tracks and creates an incredible mysterious, euphoric and dark sphere which gets into your body and your head. Tracks like Lump, the sky was pink & planet 7 are superb. The Border Community label is also excellent. James Holden is always developing and you can say he is the future..

I have two contradicting comments to add to this discography...
Firstly, James Holden is an absolute genius for conceiving two impossibly good tracks, namely "Nothing"
and "I Have Put Out The Light". For me, these two techy monsters touch a part deep inside me that few grooves do. Both have amazing dirty, grinding, erotic basslines and powerful melodies.
Unfortunately I must also add that I don't like the direction Holden is taking these days. He seems to have lost his knack for techno stormers and instead has become weirder and weirder, musicwise, by the day.
Regardless, said tracks will forever remain priceless gems in my collection...

Another very gifted talent in the art of making music however his djing skills doesnt come anywhere near the magic he can put out when producing. He is notorious of trainwrecking time after time, perhaps that is the reason why his Essential Mix of 2002 was pre-recorded on a laptop. Altho it should just be a matter of time before he has mastered the knowledge of a good mix because without exaggregating, he seems to be one of the most musically gifted people around.

August 27, 2020I consider myself to have a very open mind regarding music, but unfortunately nothing Holden, nor Border Community, has released since those formative years have ever caught my attention. I did buy The Idiots Are Winning and tried and tried, but it's just too damn cold and "elitist", and I even watched Holden play live with The Animal Spirits while peaking on a great acid session at Ozora 2018, but it was just OK.
I totally understand Holden's reaction after being treated like a God for some years, where too much expectations must've caused a lot of mind ghosts within him, and obviously I wish him to create the music he likes. But my personal interest is long time gone for his current music. Luckily his old treasure is so big that I'll never get tired of it, and I'll probably never get tired of occasionally entrancing my crowd with one or a couple of his masterpieces in the perfect moments out in the forest parties of Scandinavia. And I'm still hoping for a danceable comeback.
