English actor and theatre director.
Considered one of the pre-eminent British stage actors of the twentieth century, his career spanned eight decades. Famous from the start of his career for his voice and his mastery of Shakespearean verse, he broadcast more than a hundred radio and television dramas between 1929 and 1994. He was one of the few people to win an Emmy, a Tony, an Oscar and a Grammy Award (as well as winning many British awards) and was knighted in 1953. The Gielgud Theatre, one of the most prestigious venues in London's West End, is named in his honour.
