Democratic socialist politician, U.S. Senator from Vermont since 2007 and candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 and 2020 US Presidential elections. U.S. Representative from Vermont 1991-2006. Mayor of Burlington, VT from 1981-1989. Candidate for Vermont Governor in 1976 and 1986. Participated in the civil rights movement in Chicago in the 1960s, including hosting the sit-ins protesting segregated housing and schooling. Moved to rural Vermont in late 1960s, working as a carpenter, farmer, and social worker. Created several documentary films. Leader in the Liberty Union Party in the 1970s.

In 1987, during his tenure as Mayor, he released a short album of folk music and passionate speaking on social issues. Later in his political career, musical albums were created related to his presidential campaigns.
