Edwige Braun-Belmore, Claude Arto (Mathématiques Modernes); Eric Débris, Clode Panik (Métal Urbain); Jacno, Elli Medeiros (Stinky Toys); Lizzy Mercier Descloux. These late seventies early eighties personalities were French poseurs with creative musical genius- brats of (post)punk /new wave eurotrash, scions and sirens of electronic cold wave no wave etc notoriety. Guided by the brilliant influence of jean-michel jarre of 'Oxygène' fame and with a nod to giorgio moroder and with British and American punk as a cypher to burn off traditional rock with a different more human focus than the Germanic aura of, say Kraftwerk, or the gothic Yanks Suicide who both influenced the more French-minimalist Deux, a rival band to MM, with a sound the above scene, seeking new ground, was joyously breaking away from. One thing uniting all these acts was an avantgarde romantic zeitgeist that was particularly leftbank. The whacky tongue-in-cheek Mathématiques Modernes proved they could follow in the master Jarre's footsteps and stylishly and effortlessly adapt the Eurobeat new wave ethic from epic film soundtrack proportions to a stylized new disco motorik that is international and seamlessly enigmatic. Kraftwerk's wimpy pace was shunned for the power of new disco. Like a certain ratio daf and metal urbain MM's 'Disco Rough' really rocks, timeless and impressive. One of the great 12" successes of the era. Elsewhere on the classic night hawks (visiteurs du soir) lp this band seem to reinvent swing! And the chanteuse and punk goddess, Belmore, turns on the style. Like the best of the French brats these ingénues were prodigiously slick and seizing the future by making the past seem retro whilst exploiting earlier retro eg big band sounds in the mix. Sometimes verging on parody of any style they exploit but just as Roxy Music (other great nouveau-retro parodists) were, always always loveable. Pity bubbles do explode, albeit this gallic plastic perfection once ruled the roost
