The company was originally founded in 1919 operating under the name EMELKA. After the Nazi regime in Germany took over the studios in 1932 (renamed to Bavaria Film AG/Bavaria Filmkunst GmbH), the studios were closed down in 1945 and remained unused until 1956. After a short period of privatisation from 1956 til 1959 (Bavaria Filmkunst AG), the Bavaria Atelier GmbH was the legal name for the studio society, which lasted until the end of 1987. Starting from 1988, the company's successor was called Bavaria Film GmbH.
