I don't know anything about this guy other than that he did the mastering on a bunch of the Disco Diamonds compilations. On those, he tended to use a smiley-face EQ, over-applied noise reduction, and extreme stereo expansion. Dynamic range suffers as well, though not as bad as it could be. Overall, the damage isn't much of a problem until you hear the originals. I hate dynamic range compression, so that's part of it, but the biggest difference is from the stereo expansion. Sounds that are deliberately panned slightly to one side get pushed out to the extreme right and left, where they are more noticeable... so something that was supposed to be somewhat mono and buried in the mix is now clear and loud, as if it were made on a computer yesterday, instead of on analog gear in the mid-1980s. When this processing is done to every song on a CD, some of the quintessential '80s moodiness is stripped away. Maybe this is what the record company demanded; I don't know...
