Capsule (4)

Profile:
Capsule (カプセル, kapuseru?), stylised as "capsule" on earlier releases and as "CAPSULE" from 2013, is a Japanese duo formed by Yasutaka Nakata (co-producer, art director, responsible for all lyrics and music) and Toshiko Koshijima (vocals). They debuted in 2001, when their their first single was released by Yamaha Music. In 2003 Yasutaka created his own label Contemode and has produced other artists on the label.

On their first album, their sound was standard J-Pop, but with "Cutie Cinema Replay", they changed to Shibuya-kei sound, then later, slowly moved towards electro pop and then electro house.

Of the Shibuya-Kei artists of the late 90's-early 00's, Capsule's music was among the most appealing for both its sincere lightheartedness and excellent arrangements/production. I've heard them compared to Pizzicato Five but personally I feel that Capsule had a more consistent and fully-realized sound than that band did. There's a stretch of at least four great albums that they put out from 2003-2005, each of which is well worth owning.

During the late 00's their sound completely changed and they now make slickly-produced but bland and mediocre club music. Perhaps you could call them bandwagon riders from the start since they were one of the last big Shibuya-Kei artists of the movement, but any amount of sincere lightheartedness of songs like "Cosmic Tone Cooking" or "Happy Life Generator" was supplanted by dirtier, more unpleasant songs like "I Just Wanna XXX You". What's particularly noteworthy about this is how quickly and jarringly this transition was made: many bands would ease slightly into a new sound, but the immediacy with which their approach changed was quite something. It really does feel like two completely separate entities that split off with the release of FRUITS CLiPPER in 2006.

Still, a wonderful early career with many highlights.
