The East Texas String Ensemble

Profile:
The East Texas String Ensemble (pronounced "In-SIM-bel") formed in 1968 in the college town of Nacogdoches, TX, and consisted of 4 college professors who loved traditional country music: Francis "Ab" Abernethy (bass fiddle and vocals), Stan Alexander (guitar and vocals), Charles Gardner (fiddle, mandolin, and vocals), and Tom Nall, (banjo and vocals). The ETSE played county fairs, weddings, U.S. State Department cultural programs and - beginning in 1972, they represented Texas hillbilly music at the annual Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio. In approximately 1976, Charles Gardner left the group and was replaced by local high school teacher and fiddler Ronnie Wolf. The original members of the band are all deceased but leave a legacy of having communicated the joy and excitement of traditional rural country music to new generations.
