Believe it or not, they were not really a band but rather more a solo act. What happened was that the singer (jas mann) would record and write demos alone in his bedroom and send them out. One got him a contract with Warner. (Which somehow got transferred to EMI)
Aside from remixes, all of the cd tracks were recorded by mann himself at a disused warehouse and a producer by the name of Steve powers would pop by to supervise him.
His manager paired him with Carrie Melbourn and a few guys to make a band for the concerts and music videos. But it is really just him.

Since the label is typically the legal owner of an artists recording, they can bring other artists to make remixes for them. Someone thought it was a good idea to splice the original and the baker mixes together in a deceptive manner to make a hit.

I recently bought a very specfic edition of Babylon Zoo - The Boy With The X-Ray Eyes that contains 3 different versions of spaceman, the last one being exactly that: hyperspeed spaceman in all its chipmunky glory from start to finish.

This group was like a really bland and outrageously pretentious 14-year-old Marilyn Manson trying to do gothy Britpop. The fact that all of this music was ever released worldwide is a real headscratcher, when there was so much amazing music by other artists that was never promoted nor financed. This group basically encapsulates much of the crass, embarrassing side of music from the late 1990s. The fact that basically every album and single cover this group put out was accompanied by photos of the lead singer trying to look as louche and edgy as possible says all you need to know. About as relevant and substantial as an L.A. cocaine party. Yech.
