Connelly formed a publishing and songwriting team with fellow Brit James Campbell (aka Jimmy Campbell), the duo known as Irving King. They also collaborated with other songwriters.

Among their best known compositions are If I Had You (1928), Goodnight Sweetheart (1931) and Try A Little Tenderness (1933).
