Bass Communion is a project of Steven Wilson. The records released under this name are in an ambient, drone, and/or electronic vein. They come about as experiments in texture made from processing instrumental performances and field recordings - with the exception of the first three albums, which include some electronic sources.
Bass Communion has collaborated with many leading experimental musicians, including Robert Fripp of King Crimson, saxophonist Theo Travis, Muslimgauze, and Dirk Serries (on the ongoing Continuum (2) project).

As a postlude to the other reviewers recommendation of listening to 'II' as an entry point to Bass Communion, I would also suggest chucking your other portable devices, screens and anything that is likely to distract into another room and close the door. Allow yourself to be immersed without reaching for the internet as a 'companion activity'. Allow the music to do its thing.
Even better, wait till the sun goes down and switch off ALL the lights.

Steven Wilson's Ambient alter-ego. His music is more recently delving into drone and 'musique concrète' territory; earlier albums being more traditionally 'ambient'. I certainly prefer the more ambient side to Bass Communion but it's all interesting stuff, even if not always to my tastes. All Bass Communion music is melancholic but some of it is very unsettling - casual listeners who enjoy Steven's solo career or Porcupine Tree's will not necessarily understand this body of music. I recommend newcomers start with 'Bass Communion II' and if they enjoy that, move to the much darker (but fantastic) 'Ghosts On Magnetic Tape'. If 'Bass Communion II' isn't your thing and you still want to hear what all the fuss is about I'd suggest listening to the individual tracks: 'Glacial', 'Drugged', 'Ghosts On Magnetic Tape II', 'Piano/Soprano Saxophone' and 'Conflux'.
