The much loved and popular entertainer 'Dan the Street Singer', whose real name was Basil Morahan, came from the beautiful seaside village of Louisburgh in Co Mayo. He was a multi talented singer, composer and musician. Basil composed several songs and monologues which he also recorded and are included on the album 'The Magic of O'Hehir. Dan the Street Singer appeared regularly on the 'Late Late Show' and other television programmes and he recorded a number of albums. It was as 'Dan the Street Singer' that he became known throughout Ireland. He could be seen regularly on the streets of Tralee during the annual Rose of Tralee Festival and in Salthill, Galway, entertaining locals and visitors alike as he pulled his cart behind him to perform a varied selection of songs old and new. His fame saw him emerge as one of the country's foremost cabaret attractions and he enjoyed huge popularity all around the country. Wherever he travelled he gained many new friends and left a lasting and memorable impression on those fortunate to have met him. Dan was truly a very talented entertainer and a very warm, special person who sadly passed away in the summer of 1998 at the age of 68. May he rest in peace.
