Stephan Mathieu is a self taught composer, performer, and installation artist, working in the field of electroacoustic music. His sound is largely based on early instruments, environmental recordings, and obsolete media, which are recorded and transformed by means of experimental microphony, re-editing techniques, and dedicated software processes. He operates Schwebung Mastering, a high end mastering studio specialized in audio for analog and digital products and the restoration of archival material.
Since the late 1990s, Stephan’s music has been released on over 50 vinyl records, CDs, and high resolution downloads, both solo and in collaboration with Akira Rabelais, Ekkehard Ehlers, Janek Schaefer, Taylor Deupree, David Sylvian, Fennesz and with Robert Hampson as Main on international labels like 12k, Editions Mego, Line, Samadhisound, and his own Schwebung imprint.
