Okay, someone has to have figured this out by now... What are the best entry points for this ridiculously indulgent discography? I got into them about ten years ago and did a fair bit of exploring. My tastes followed the cleaner scent of their "major label" releases like Barn Nova and Space Homestead, because I found them more digestible than the other stuff I was able to uncover back then, but even those left me feeling like I was missing out on some greater iteration of the band that might be hiding in plain sight on one of innumerable cassettes.

So, my questions: What are the definitive recordings? Is there a magic era when the duo 'clicked' with their band better than any other? Which studio sessions produced the finest batch of songs? Surely there are answers on some message board somewhere, right? I mean, who's actually collecting/keeping track of this mess? Shouldn't there be a spirited debate going on somewhere? You wouldn't know it surfing the vacant comment sections of discogs...

If someone were to take a band with a similarly mad discography (the Grateful Dead or King Gizzard, let's say) most dedicated fans could easily recite their essentials. But here, it seems to be a single, impenetrable wall of gooey tremolo with no True North. Endless guitar solos incinerated in their own feedback and lyrics drowning in their own reverb. Even the most adventurous explorers find themselves lost in a sea of drugged-up nonsense with no anchors, buoys or compass for guidance. And I say this as a listener with a high tolerance for drugged-up nonsense. All I'm askin' is; where's the chronic? If someone asked for help getting into The Dead, you wouldn't pass them a crusty copy of Dick's Picks #84 and say good luck. You'd hype up their cherished Europe '72. Their acclaimed American Beauty. Their legendary Winterland residency in '74.

We know the definitive version of "Dark Star" was recorded on Feb 27th, 1969. Any MV&EE superfans care to share their vote for best "Tea Devil"?
