5th President of the United States (1817–25), born 28 April 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA, died 4 July 1831 in New York, New York, USA. He is best remembered for the "Monroe Doctrine." which stated that the United States would not allow European interference in the Western Hemisphere. He was the last Revolutionary War general to serve as President.
