American country musician, songwriter, and record producer, born in Denver, Colorado, died 20 July 2015 aged 72.

Since the 1960s he has composed an impressive string of hit records and platinum selling albums. Had his first US #1 hit record in 1966, with Eddy Arnold's Somebody Like Me. He received a Grammy Award in 1982 for Willie Nelson's recording of Always On My Mind.
